Career & Technical Education

The CTE Pathway is designed for industry professionals or technical experts who want to share their knowledge with the next generation by teaching in Mississippi high schools. With an associate’s degree or higher, candidates can qualify for a provisional or renewable license depending on their experience and credentials.

  • Hold at least an associate’s degree in a career or technical field
  • Or already have a valid Mississippi teaching license
  • Complete State Board-approved CTE licensure requirements for your chosen subject

If you meet all requirements, you’ll earn a full five-year license. If you’re still working on parts of the process, you may start with a three-year provisional license.

This pathway is for teaching grades 7–12 in CTE subject areas, such as:

  • Agriculture
  • Automotive technology
  • Business and marketing
  • Culinary arts
  • Health sciences
  • Information technology
  • Welding
  • And more; subject areas are defined by district and workforce needs.

License Duration

  • Three-year nonrenewable or five-year renewable
    • The five-year renewable license is the goal, and it can be upgraded to a higher class level with more credentials or experience.
  • If you’re still completing requirements, you may be issued a three-year nonrenewable license, but you’ll need to finish all requirements before it expires.
  • Licenses can be transferred between districts, but only the five-year license. The three-year license is tied to the original school or district.
  • Some endorsement areas require a degree in a specific field.
  • Three-year licenses are not transferable between schools or districts.
  • You must complete all requirements before the three-year license expires to qualify for the renewable five-year license.

The Career and Technical Education License Guidelines offer everything you need to know about licensure for your chosen subject.
