License Details
This highly selective alternate route program prepares passionate candidates to teach in Mississippi public schools that are facing critical teacher shortages. MTC gives you:
- Free tuition for a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) at the University of Mississippi
- A full-time salaried teaching position during the school year
- Ongoing support and training from day one
Only 25–35 applicants are accepted each year, so it’s competitive but incredibly rewarding.
Requirements
You’re eligible if you:
- Have a bachelor’s degree
- Completed 12–18 credit hours in one of the following subjects:
- Math
- Science
- English
- Social Studies
- Foreign Language
- Earned at least a 3.0 GPA in your undergraduate work
- Meet one of the following test requirements:
- 21 ACT composite score
- 990 SAT (math + verbal only)
- Passing score on the Praxis Core
- Pass the appropriate Praxis subject test for your teaching area
Approved Subjects
You can earn licensure for teaching grades 7–12 in:
- English
- Mathematics
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Social Studies
- Foreign Languages
License Duration
- You’ll begin with a three-year non-renewable license, issued after completing the first three graduate-level courses in the program.
- Once you complete the year-long internship and earn your MAT degree, you’ll be eligible for a five-year renewable teaching license.
Restrictions
- You must complete three MAT courses before receiving your initial license.
- The three-year license cannot be renewed—it must be converted to a five-year license after program completion.
- This program is limited to specific content areas and schools with teacher shortages.
